OPENING NIGHT: Hulda, Lilli & The Roach || TRANSMISSION

Celebrate with us the grand opening of our two new exhibitions: Hulda, Lilli & The Roach and TRANSMISSION!

Hulda, Lilli & The Roach by Maija Tammi

They are called Hulda & Lilli, and simply by giving them a name you feel closer to them. Hulda & Lilli are a chameleon and a locust in a story by the Finnish artist Maija Tammi. Through storytelling she examines empathy towards both non-human animals. Meticulously captured and emotionally loaden, the stories teach us about human nature. But as a viewer you first must choose.

Maija Tammi also made a new work, again delving into the human and non-human mind. On The Third Dayfeatures an intoxicated cockroach. It slowly wakes up in a dark cave not knowing how it got there. It also wonders what the growing thing between its legs is? The Roach has three days to figure it out...

Hulda, Lilli & The Roach is Maija Tammi's first solo in the Netherlands. Her work is hybrid and multilayered to its core, connecting art and science, nature and culture, storytelling and research in intriguing ways.

TRANSMISSION by Touki Delphine

Far from the noise of the surface, where humans and technology rule, lurks an underground world full of life. Here, plants, organisms and fungi whisper undisturbed in their own language.

Amsterdam-based collective Touki Delphine believes that learning to listen to this underground life can be a first step towards a more balanced life, for humans and non-humans alike. Their installation TRANSMISSION lets us experience the mysterious network of the subterranean from surprising perspectives. With buzzing brake lines, hissing snakes and glowing reflectors from the junkyard, they create a poetic representation of the most complex natural system on earth.

To discover how plants and fungi actually work together, evolutionary biologist Toby Kiers maps them all over the world. Filmmaker Marleine van der Werf followed her in this process, resulting in the short documentary The Underground Astronaut. It too can be seen at MU in a duet with TRANSMISSION.

Opening July 5 || Doors open: 07:30 p.m.
